Hard water is simply water that contains a large amount of soluble minerals, notably calcium and magnesium that build up along the surface of pipes and fixtures. We call this build up, scale.

Hard water makes it difficult to get soap to lather and puts those annoying white spots on your glassware. It's always unsightly where you can see it, but it can be damaging in places where you can't see it.
